Breathe Easier, Look Your Best: The Ultimate Guide to Rhinoplasty & Septoplasty

For a fairly small body part, your nose plays a big role in your life. It’s a highly visible facial feature, and it’s the main pathway you use to get the oxygen you need every minute of every day. While you can breathe through your mouth, that’s certainly not ideal.

If you have complaints about your nose, you’re in the right place. Whether you have difficulty breathing or you’re looking to make a cosmetic change, you can come see Matthew W. Shawl, MD.

He offers two categories of procedures to help you breathe easier and look your best: septoplasty to correct a deviated septum and rhinoplasty (more widely known as a nose job). Here at our New York City office in Union Square, Dr. Shawl can help you figure out what’s right for you based on your nose.

Septoplasty: If the septum is the problem

If you have trouble breathing through your nose, you could be dealing with a deviated septum. Your septum is the thin wall between your nostrils. In most people, that wall is straight, allowing air to flow freely through both nostrils.

But if you have some crookedness (deviation) in that wall, it can make it hard to breathe. Fortunately, Dr. Shawl can correct a deviated septum with a procedure called a septoplasty. With a specialized surgery, he straightens out the bone and cartilage between your nostrils.

Septoplasty usually comes with a shorter recovery period than its more widely-known cousin, rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty: For bigger changes to your nose

While a septoplasty focuses on correcting your septum, a rhinoplasty, or nose job, zooms out. Dr. Shawl can use this procedure to change your nose’s overall structure.

That means a rhinoplasty can include correction for a deviated septum, or what surgeons call a septorhinoplasty. But it doesn’t have to stop there. He can also use this surgery to change the shape and size of your nose. If you want nose surgery for cosmetic reasons, rhinoplasty is the procedure for you.

Deciding on the right procedure for you

If you’re unhappy with the way your nose looks or functions, come visit Dr. Shawl. During a consultation, he takes the time to learn what you want to change. Whether you’re trying to improve the appearance of your nose, breathe more easily, or both, he can tailor a procedure for you.

Once Dr. Shawl identifies the kind of surgery for you, he lets you know what to expect during recovery. We can work with you to schedule your procedure when your calendar can accommodate the downtime.
